This is my new series where I present relatively new artists that I cannot stop listening too. I am always obsessing over (like many, many people) older musicians way before my time. I like nostalgia, I like collecting old records and I like discovering a previous era's sound, but I have stopped taking the time to enjoy bands and solo artist's coming out of my own generation. It seems a lot of us complain (I am fully generalising here) about the music of our generation and yearn for music from the past, which I can be guilty of too. Basically I want to start celebrating new music and musicians coming out of today's time! It may end up being artists that aren't necessarily new, I'll figure it out. Right now I am crushing on Wolf Alice.

Hailing from London and originally coming together as a folk band, they have finally found their sound, by ditching the acoustics, band members changing and becoming a "sassy and supreme new grunge gang". Consisting of Ellie (vocals/guitar), Joff (guitar), Theo (bass) and Joel (drums), they have released two singles, a b-side and signed with Chess Club Records, which must mean an EP soon. Please!
I have fallen in love with Ellie Rowsell's sweet-sounding folkish voice unpredictably mixed with electric-dreamy-grunge sounds. She is enigmatic and bewitching. Sometimes reminiscent of The XX, with moments of softness and nostalgic/deeply melancholic lyrics, but then fused with Riot Grrl choruses (not far from the likes of Hole, Rilo Kiley or Bikini Kill), and a quiet to loud dynamic (think The Breeders and The Pixies).
Wednesday doesn't necessarily fit with their recently released singles, but the lyrics are captivating and it illustrates Ellie's spark.
Moving in the same circles as Swim Deep and Peace, big things are coming for them this year. As one of England's up and coming bands they are about to emerge beyond the London scene. Basically I just want to be their best friend!

ReplyDeleteThankyou for sharing this they are really nice to listen to and I mean 'nice' in the 'nicest' way possible. I think people have become quite up themselves these days, if it doesn't fall under the "omgggg old indie rock/punk band so cool & hip!!1" then basically they arent worth the listen. Which is stupid because there are so many good artists which are going unrecognised..
